Works
I work with heavy materials. In the face of this weight, my body seeks intimacy. The material’s mass is ever-present, as is its rigidity; with every attempt to shape it, I am required to give something in return.
These materials are deeply bound to the past and present of the place where I live.
Wooden planks as formwork, iron as framework, and concrete as substance. These materials are enlisted in the making of the landscape that surrounds us.
When feet meet a highway, this landscape can be encountered in its entirety-the body’s sense of displacement against vast expanses of asphalt. Like existence against the desolation of the desert.
My works reveal the hand that shaped them. I make their process of becoming visible, their past.
This wood was once a trunk.
This pool was cast in a mold.
I know wood through my father, who works with it devotedly, following the movement of its grain. I also know wood from my mother’s garden, built by my grandparents-a garden dense with enormous trees, heavy with fruit and shade.
I seek to leave an echo, the touch of an absent hand. A hand dwelling in the past, its touch passing through time, through generations.
Three sculptures wove this exhibition together:
The first is a portrait of my beloved.
My beloved dwells among the waves, her blue hair cutting through the horizon of the sea. She draws near in the murmur of her becoming and recedes as her form breaks apart.
The second and third are sculptures I created together with my father.
My father and I are destined to die, destined to resemble one another. I am destined to echo him as he echoes his father, destined to try to escape him and to be washed ashore of the very same beach.
